Several months ago my professor asked me if I would be interested in attending a conference in Los Angeles. My ears perked up as he presented an opportunity to travel to California. I immediately accepted this offer after doing background research on the conference.
HITEC is the largest hospitality, technology and finance conference in the world. The event is organized by HFTP, Hospitality Finance and Technology Professionals (the hospitality industry really like their acronyms). HFTP provides educational events, certification and resources with over 4,000 members worldwide.
The conference takes place over a week and offers a unique selection of education sessions and an expo that showcases the latest industry products and services. As a volunteer of the conference I’m required to help with registration and note-taking for different sessions.
The timing of the offer aligned well with my work. At the same time I was presented with this opportunity from my professor I was switching departments to Distribution and Revenue Management. It was neat that was I was learning at work could apply to what I would be experiencing at the conference.
Saturday morning Aaron and I caught the same flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles and met JC, another friend and fellow student, at the airport. We checked into our The Millennium Biltmore Hotel where we will be staying for the duration of our stay.
Our first evening we explored LA Live, an entertainment area in downtown Los Angeles, next to the Staples Center and Convention Center. Then we went bowling to connect and meet the other student volunteers!
