Travelogue Hawaii: Manawaiopuna Falls

blog, North America, Travel

One of my highlights that I mentioned in my earlier post was hiking in a rainforest with my dad and sister. I had researched a lot of different places that all of us could hike. With Hawaii having a mix of mountains, rainforest and coastal areas it was hard to pick just one place to hike.

We decided to go with Manawaiopuna Falls because I read reviews that it wasn’t too strenuous. It was such a breeze! No worries at all if you’re ever planning to hike this one.  I saw families, kids and flip flops on the trail.

The highlight of the area is a beautiful 360 foot high waterfall. The trail head and parking lot is located in the south-central part of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Manawaiopuna Falls used to be a secret waterfall in Hawaii but all that went out the window when a shot of Manawaiopuna Falls was used in the movie Jurassic Park. Dinosaurs would definitely attract tourists.

At the start of our hike we also saw the filming spot for Hunger Games 2 (almost all of the jungle action was in a section of the forest). The crew from the movie installed lights on the trees and brought in fake props for the cast (says a local)!

As you can see from the title, we were completely unaware of the mosquitoes. They completely caught us off guard but it was our fault for not thinking of them. Other than our bites, we really enjoyed seeing a completely different side of Hawaii. I loved being surrounded by the green trees and beautiful vegetation!
